A number of research studies into ways to stop smoking are now indicating that differences exist in the smoking behaviour of men and women.
As an example women tend to use cigarettes with a lower nicotine and tar content, on average smoke less cigarettes each day than men, in addition women also inhale on cigarettes less deeply than men.
These differences however may be accounted for by social factors (low tar cigarette brands may be considered more feminine) rather than physical or genetic sensitivity to nicotine.
Historically the overall number of people smoking in the United States fell in the 1970s and 1980s, the stayed fairly level in the 1990s before dropping slightly again in the early years of this decade.
During this period the decline in smoking was more pronounced in men than women that has led to a situation now where the number of men who smoke is only slightly higher than women. This situation is made slightly worse by the increase in female teenagers starting to smoke and the indication that women are (on average) less likely to quit smoking than men.
Some of the very large scale studies into effective ways to stop smoking show that women are less likely to initiate stopping smoking and are statistically slighter more likely to start smoking again and relapse back into their habit.
Nicotine replacement Therapy also seems to be less effective in women than men and not so effective in reducing the nicotine craving. Some other studies have shown that the withdrawal process from nicotine is much more difficult and intense for women.
In addition women may be more concerned than men in regard to possible weight gain after quitting smoking. It has been shown however that the use of behavioral therapies such as, stop smoking hypnosis, neuro linguistic programming and cognitive behavioral therapy prior to quitting to address weight gain worries help women stop smoking more successfully.
An interesting aspect of the new ways to stop smoking, such as Zyban and Champix (Chantix) is that they seem to have a positive effect on post cessation weight gain; this can develop into an additional strategy in the fight against nicotine addiction
The important factors discovered in these recent studies are critical to consider when developing new smoking cessation treatment and new ways to stop smoking. It may well be that standard treatments can be modified to allow for the different genders sensitivity to nicotine and other factors to offer more and more successful results.
New research is highlighting differences in which nicotine addiction is experienced by men and women
In this article Peter Ward investigates these differences and discusses how they are pointing the way to new treatment concepts. To find out more, click on the link http://www.quit-smoking-asap.com

It is said that cigarettes help to reduce stress and help people relax, a fact smokers regularly produce when asked why they cant quit smoking. I cant quit Im too stressed out. Is a common sentence uttered by many a smoker every day. And when in a tough, problematic, critical and anxious situation a smoker will more than likely need a cigarette to calm his nerves.
And smokers also get several other benefits from smoking including increased concentration, an added energy boost mental strength to deal with tough situations, curing boredom and relaxation.
These aspects can be condensed into two main beneficial areas of smoking. Firstly that, smoking is calming and relaxing, and secondly, it helps smokers concentrate and think clearly.
So on the Calming and Relaxing side - cigarettes take the stress out of life (relaxation) and help relive tension and stress. The benefits of smoking are to help smokers calm down and reduce anxiety and stress. When you visualise or think of relaxing what comes to your mind? Its usually a slumping of the shoulders effect, that aaaaaahhhhhhhhh slip into your arm chair and letting go feeling you are relaxing.
On the Strength and Boost side - smoking is uplifting, helps with concentration, keeps smokers on their toes and gives them mental strength. The other benefit of smoking is that it lifts smokers up a level their senses are awakened. When you visualise or think of yourself concentrating and being uplifted what comes to mind? Generally its a head up, on our feet, eyes open, chest out, shoulders back and an alert state of mind and effect it gives you that Im ready, lets do it and lets go feeling.
So cigarettes can have two effects - at times cigarettes can make you feel more relaxed and calmer a general feeling of tranquillity or peacefulness. AND cigarettes can make you feel more confident, more capable, better equipped to deal with tough situations and they can give you increased concentration a general energetic and empowered feeling.
But how is it that this same product or substance can do both of these things? Two different things that are complete opposites?
Smokers have been told, and believe that cigarettes not only help to lower stress levels but they also help to keep you on your toes two completely different effects. Relaxation is a suppressing feeling while concentration is an uplifting feeling.
How can the same substance or product make the body feel up and raring to go and also make it relaxed and increase inner tranquillity?
The truth is that cigarettes cant make or help smokers do both, or either its impossible. Youve also been told that cigarettes can cure boredom, help you enjoy your coffee and tea and meals and also sex more.
But again, how can cigarettes do all of these things? Yes nicotine does have a stimulating effect, (as it releases dopamine, the bodys natural pleasure drug, into the brain) but how the hell does it make you feel up, down and everything in between?
Basically we have been told that cigarettes can pretty much do whatever you want them to, depending on the circumstances surrounding you while you smoke. So if you need some mental energy or strength have a cigarette and if you want to relax and forget about your problems then you should have a cigarette too! How can the same cigarette make you feel how you want to feel, depending on your choosing?
The truth is that despite nicotine releasing dopamine into the brain, all the other substances in a cigarette actually put a huge strain on your brain and body they make you feel more tense, more anxious, more stressed and more on edge. No matter how much you argue against this its the cold hard truth!
Look at the undeniable stressful effects of smoking on you and your body below.
1. When carbon monoxide and nicotine enter your body they reduce the amount and supply of oxygen to your brain. Without this oxygen (the fuel of the brain), your brain struggles to function properly, think clearly and concentrate.
It is a fact that nicotine and carbon monoxide reduce oxygen levels in a smokers body and it is also a fact that the body needs oxygen to concentrate, not even the doctors and scientists can deny that!
Essentially oxygen is the basis of all activity in the body any effort the body makes (from thinking to running), is harder with less oxygen. The carbon monoxide and nicotine in cigarettes prevent oxygen from reaching the brain and the other organs in the body this simply cannot help you relax or concentrate. Its impossible!
The nicotine may give you a little pick me up, but it and cigarettes simply cannot do all of the things that millions of smokers, just like you have been led to believe and continue telling yourself.
2. Nicotine is a vaso-constrictor it shrinks your veins and arteries in size, meaning that your heart is forced to work harder to pump the same amount of blood around your body, but through a smaller space. Add to that, the fact that tar and the other chemicals in cigarettes are being deposited in your veins reducing blood flow even more.
The result is that your beats 35,000 times more per day than a non-smoker and your blood pressure is also ten to twenty points higher than it should be, under this added workload.
3. The effect that nicotine has on the insulin in your blood puts your body under constant stress. Every forty five minutes or so, when you smoke, the nicotine in your body blocks the release of insulin (this is the appetite suppressant effect).
Once this nicotine has worn off your insulin is re-released, and forty five minutes to an hour or two later you have another cigarette.
This stop start process puts a huge strain on your body a non-smokers body will only reduce the flow of insulin when he really needs it when he hasnt eaten in a while. But smokers make their bodys stop-start this process twenty times more, or more a day than a non-smoker. This is an added stressful workload on your body.
4. The several thousand chemicals, poisons, toxins and carcinogens in a cigarette force the body into a state of shock.
When you inhale the smoke from a cigarette your body has to adapt to the presence of harmful chemicals. Each of which are deposited in your veins, lungs, heart, arteries and other organs in your body, then when you stop smoking for a few hours (e.g. at night) your body does its best to clear out the foreign substances.
You will also experience this process through a smokers cough in the day and also in the morning, when yours body has had eight hours or so to start the cleansing process, and you cough up a lot of mucus.
Both of these attempts at cleaning out the toxins puts your body through a strenuous cleansing regime
process every time you stop smoking, every day of your smoking life. A non-smoker will only experience this cleansing process, as extensively as a smoker when he has a virus or infection or if they smoke a cigarette.
The truth is that smoking is only an effective stress relief tool because you believe cigarettes and nicotine can help you. And that is the key you believe.
It all comes back to what you think. Because you tell yourself that cigarettes calm you, you think they do. Because you tell yourself that they help you concentrate, you think they do (despite the fact that you are putting a huge strain on your system your heart beats an extra 35,000 times per day due to the reduction in vein size making your blood pressure higher).
So even though cigarettes and nicotine are having a harmful and weakening effect on your body, which you have always known, you believe that they make you stronger and more capable of dealing with life. It is a clever trick that the tobacco companies have played on you!
They have shown you on films, on TV and in commercials that cigarettes help you concentrate, relive stress, beat problems, enjoy sex more and that they make men more manly and women more sexy.
You have to give them credit because it has worked and it is still working! But once you take a step back and look at the overall picture, you can see that advertising and your beliefs have led you to believe that you need cigarettes and nicotine, and that they bring you many benefits. When in fact that is all in your head!
But it cant just be the placebo effect (believing that something will happen, makes it happen) that makes you concentrate and relax can it? The truth is no, but only to an extent.
So yes when you smoke you may feel slightly relaxed this is down to the way you breathe when you smoke. Have you noticed any difference in the way you breathe when you smoke? Take a minute and put your fingers to your lips and pretend you are smoking, or better yet light up a cigarette!
Have you noticed anything different in comparison to your normal breathing patterns? You should have noticed the two following patterns.
Firstly, your in-breath was much stronger when smoking. Try it again, inhale as if you were smoking a cigarette. This deeper in-breath sucks in a lot more air than normal breathing because you are sucking air in from the bottom of your stomach (your diaphragm). With this extra air also comes more oxygen your brain and bodys fuel, up to 20% more oxygen in fact than when you breathe normally.
The second thing you should have noticed is the way you exhale. Your out-breath was also much stronger and deeper, when smoking. Try it again, breathe out deeply without cigarette smoke, do it several times.
How do you feel? You feel relaxed and calm dont you! Exhaling feels good, especially when it is done strongly. Have you noticed that when you laugh and when you sigh you exhale and breathe out strongly? Breathing out has a calming and positive effect on the body. So even though the smoke puts a strain on your system, when you breathe out strongly you feel good.
So basically when you smoke you are just practicing deep breathing exercises. The deep breaths provide your body and organs with more oxygen, which helps you to relax and release stress to a degree. I say to a degree because that extra oxygen is not enough to compensate for the strain that the chemicals in a cigarette put on your body.
So smoking itself doesnt actually reduce stress, or help you concentrate in any way its the way you breathe that does that for you. Have you ever wondered why people tell you to take deep breaths when you feel a craving or withdrawal symptoms? Its because the deep breathing mimics the way you breathe when you smoke.
Every time you have a cigarette you put your body under stress. Then your body tries to clean out the chemicals, which again makes you feel uncomfortable, and puts you under stress. And you do this every day going round and round in circles, no wonder you a re so stressed!
Then when your body realises it has extremely low blood sugar (no nicotine to block insulin which releases your sugar stores) you get pangs and cravings because your body needs sugar it becomes stressed. You then have a cigarette to relieve that stress. Then after forty five minutes or so the process starts all over again! You are just going around in one huge destructive and pointless circle.
People say smoking reduces stress, when in fact the stress is caused by the last cigarette when nicotine and the chemicals enter your body you put it under a huge strain. Then when the nicotine leaves your body it becomes stressed - because there is no nicotine to release sugar into the blood.
Tobacco increases stress and then relieves it (artificially by playing with your blood sugar levels) when you smoke. So smoking is basically like hitting yourself over the head with a hammer because it feels really good when you stop!
A major reason why people say they cant or wont stop smoking is they feel they would be giving up a very effective stress management technique. But once you stop smoking for a short period of time, you will become calmer, even under stress, than when you were a smoker.
Another smoking myths is that it cures boredom. This argument is so pointless that it hardly merits much attention. Yes some people believe that it cures boredom, but so does banging your head against a wall and stabbing yourself with a fork. That doesnt mean its either good for you, effective, productive or an adequate way to deal with the situation.
Again if you rely on cigarettes to cure boredom, all you are doing is telling yourself - I am not good enough to deal with this situation on my own. My cigarettes will take care of it.
If you smoke due to boredom, you need to pay particular attention to changing your habits so that you have adequate new methods to keep yourself entertained.
Smoking as a stress relief mechanism is just and excuse. Many smokers know this but continue to lie to themselves because it prevents them from admitting that they cannot stop smoking.
Finding new ways to deal with stress is essential if you are going to make your stop smoking attempt a success.

Smokers like the idea of smoking cessation pills. Studies in America have shown that 80% of smokers think they should quit. Many of them think that smoking cessation pills have the answers they are looking for as they offer that potential miracle cure that will take the pain, anguish and torment of smoking cessation away from smokers. But is this really the case?
There are a number of treatments available to aid smoking cessation in the form of smoking cessation pills. There are also varying degrees of success associated with each type. The two most common types of smoking cessation pill that actually do have an effect are explained here.
The first smoking cessation pill I would like to consider is probably the best known; zyban. It was developed in the 1970s as a treatment for depression when it was marketed as wellbutrin. When researchers were conducting trials of the drug, they found that the test patients were reporting quitting smoking at a significant rate. This lead to further studies where the sole focus of the study was to determine the impact of wellbutrin on smokers.
Many studies have been completed since and it is commonly agreed now that 16% of smokers, who try to quit smoking using wellbutrin as their smoking cessation pill, will succeed after one year. I.e. they will quit at some point be smoke free one year after the course of treatment has been completed.
It is not known how zyban works specifically, but it is clear that it interferes with the normal brain chemistry associated with nicotine addiction.
The side effects most commonly reported are similar to the side effects suffered by any person quitting smoking. These side effects may be from the drug zyban itself or they may be from nicotine withdrawal. Significantly, any alcohol, heart or blood pressure problems will need careful consideration by your doctor if you wish to use zyban.
The most significant side effect associated with zyban is the 1 in 1000 siezure rate. This can be life threatening so is a serious consideration for any would be quitter. You dont want to kill yourself trying to quit smoking after all!
The second smoking cessation pill I would like to consider is the new kid on the block. It is called varenicline and marketed as chantix in the US and as champix in the UK.
Pfizer, the manufacturer has claimed a 44% success rate in smoking cessation studies but there has been much criticism of their claims. Significantly, when Pfizer have sponsored studies into the effectiveness of chantix as a smoking cessation pill, they have been very stringent on which smokers are allowed into the group. It is thought that hardcore smokers or people who have serially been unable to quit smoking have been excluded in order to bump up success rates.
Independent reviews of all chantix studies have shown the truer success rate of chantix as a smoking cessation pill as being about 22%. This is not a huge success rate when compared to the claims initially made by Pfizer!
The most commonly cited side effects associated with chantix are those of nausea, sleep problems and weird dreams or nightmares. The other significant side effects are shared side effects found from nicotine withdrawal.
Due to the high rates of nausea, stomach cramps, feeling bloated, constipation or diarrhoea associated with chantix, up to 30% of patients have to abandon the treatment. Not mush fun if you have shelled out $300 for your smoking cessation pills only to find you cannot take the drug after all!
My advice is that smokers should try any non-pharmaceutical methods to quit smoking before they turn to smoking cessation pills such as chantix or zyban. Not only is there hypnosis that is very commonly known and probably as effective as chantix, there is also cognitive behavioural therapy that has very high success rates thought to be well over 50%.
As ever, every time you fail to quit smoking, you are one step closer to success. Never stop trying to quit.

NicoFix, designed to replace the nicotine fix rather than discourage smokers has arrived on the market and is available on the internet and some larger stores such as Selfridges and Harrods in London.
It comes in the form of a pump action bottle and the gel is meant to be rubbed into the palm of the hand. There is no odour or residue but the resulting nicotine fix will kick in within one minute and last from one to four hours thus keeping cigarette cravings at bay should you find yourself in a non smoking public environment.
If NicoFix is not designed to help you give up cigarettes, it will at least enable you cut back on the number and at the same time reduce the inhalation of many harmful residues as a by product of burning. Additionally there are the benefits of not polluting the air for other individuals, not inhaling poisonous elements, clean smelling clothes, less bad breath and an end to all those unsightly fag end butts lying about outside offices and workplaces.
The anti-smoking lobby are delighted right? Wrong. It turns out the intrusive polluting, the harm to young children and the general undesirability of burning something in a public place, is not after all the chief aim of this lobby. In voicing their disapproval that smokers have been given a non polluting alternative, the pointy head jobsworths inadvertently expose their real goal - to force restrictions on everyone by banning all pleasures they personally do not approve of.
That said, this new product really does give smokers a better chance of giving up an undesirable and expensive habit forever. Nicotine, despite all the hysteria in the media, is not very addictive. As an ex smoker I know the hardest part of quitting is the routine behaviour to which your brain has become accustomed particularly that moment at the end of the day with convivial company and a drink in your hand.
If youre serious about wanting to quit smoking forget about patches and gum. They have something in the order of a two percent success rate and rely on indomitable will power.
By cutting back the number of times a day you light a cigarette you are already introducing a new pattern of behaviour to the subconscious mind and this is where the secret to success lies. Using the nicotine fix together with mind altering brainwave entrainment programs will give you that winning edge over a long held habit.

Smoke Free England is here. Or is it? The smoking ban in England officially came into force at 6.00am on Sunday 1st July 2007. Why 6.00am? Who knows. But there it is. Makes as much sense as the draconian measures the government have taken over this blanket ban.
The original White Paper on Public Health issued in 2004 stated that public houses and establishments selling prepared food would be the target of the smoking ban. This made total sense, and gave businesses such as non-food Pubs the option. Whatever happened with that turnaround? Was there a referendum? A public vote? Even a general consensus debate with the businesses affected? If there was, it was kept very quiet.
According to current PC hype and statistics, there are now 146 countries that are happily smoke-free. Closer to home, we are led to believe that the bans in Scotland and Ireland were met with open arms, and have had a positive effect on the pub trade. So how come when you actually speak to individuals rather than statisticians the opposite appears to be true? Just try searching the non-PC forums for a small sample of the feedback and a much more honest picture.
If we (the smokers of England) are all so happy to be dictated to in this fashion, why havent we all done the sensible thing and given up? Why should a pub Landlord be driven to declaring his business an official consulate for a tiny island off Antigua, just to maintain his freedom of choice?
There are plenty of non-smoking establishments such as cinemas, restaurants, cafes and public transport. Why pick on those public houses that wish to exercise their right to choose. Where will it stop? Did you know that Westminster City Council have already applied to ban smoking in the streets? How soon before other local Councils follow suit? When will it become illegal to smoke in our own homes? Well, it is already actually if you work from home and share that space with colleagues or visitors to your business!
So what is the answer? The government is making sympathetic noises with regard to helping those who want to stop smoking. There is a plethora of smoking cessation aids to help you quit smoking, and now that Champix has been approved for UK prescription, perhaps now is the time to consider quitting smoking once and for all. Me? Im off to see Sir Bob Beech in Southampton to get some tips on setting up an Embassy at my local.

It can be said that Canada is among the first countries that became fully aware of the viciousness of the smoking habit. The government has spent millions of dollars just to make the average Canadian aware of this vice and to make an effort to become a smoke-free country. Canada was one of the first countries to introduce the concept of smoke-free and smoke-restricted zones. Apart from that, Canada has led an intensive awareness program through advertising on television, radio, the print media and billboards.
If you are a Canadian citizen and want to stop smoking Canada provides you with many opportunities. The most evident are the various support centers for smoking cessation. Canadian smoking centers work with small groups of people - eight to twelve - all of whom are are different stages with their smoking habit. There are frequent meetings of these groups, where different treatment options are discussed, and people who have managed to do well in quitting their habits are lauded. This is a good morale-boosting experience and gives smokers the feeling that they are not working alone.
Smoke cessation groups belonging to the Stop Smoking Canada program are very particular about keeping up with people on their program. Apart from the regular meetings, they also follow-up with telephonic conversations. Smokers who are undergoing severe withdrawal symptoms are free to call up smoke cessation professionals, who will then guide them what they must do to keep up with the habit. Such programs are very effective and helpful to the person who is planning to quit.
Most smoking cessation programs in Canada follow the cold turkey method rather than giving up one at a time. Cold turkey methods work here only because of the tremendous support given to the smoker who wishes to quit - both by the government and by the healthcare professionals. Along with the continual therapeutic sessions, antidepressants such as Wellbutrin and Chantix are prescribed to the quitters. General guidelines to improve lifestyle are also delineated.
Even in Canada - like in the US - alternative methods for smoking cessation are used in a major way. For people who want to stop smoking Canada provides a very good range of herbal products. Most of the herbal remedies used in Canada for smoke cessation act as antidepressants as well as detoxifying agents. These help the smokers to curb their addiction as well as repair whatever damage has occurred in their body already. These herbs create distaste for nicotine in the cigarette, which is a very effective way to curb the smoking addiction.
One smoke cessation herbal remedy that is very popular in Canada is SmokeRX, a careful combination of several herbs. It is a very fast acting agent, and takes the person away from the smoking habit in a few short days itself. Most orders for SmokeRX and other herbal remedies in Canada are placed online, though quite a few of them are also readily available in stores.
Hence, there are many ways to stop smoking that Canada provides. If the smoker has determination and diligence, then there are several resources available here to come out successfully from the addiction.
Are you serious about quitting smoking? If you are, then you must try the amazing all herbal stop smoking pill which actually helps you quit in just 7 days. Guaranteed. Yes, this time you can do it. SmokeRx is the ultimate in stop smoking aids and has helped numerous people to quit the habit. Stopping smoking has never been this easy or quick. Forget nicotine patches, gum and sprays. Although many people know that smoking is bad for their health, it does not stop them from the habit. But now that a new UK legislation that bans smoking in enclosed and substantially enclosed public and work places, many smokers would definitely be cutting back on their daily ration.
England was the latest country to join the smoke-free caravan following the decision of Ireland and Wales earlier this year to ban smoking. These two countries are successfully reaping the rewards despite the controversies surrounding the new law, since compliance has been considerably high and the provisions under the new law became self-enforcing after some time. For individuals and businesses that fail to do so are fined up to 2,500 pounds. Businesses have been required to put up signs all over their premises in order to inform employees and visitors of the smoke-free policy.
The fears that these businesses will lose business were unfounded, as they are now receiving non-customers who were previously thwarted by the smoke-filled rooms. These businesses should consider that smokers are just 25 percent of UKs total population and now they could enjoy the other 75 percent.
The new legislation will also have positive effects on smokers who wish to smoke but have difficulties doing so. They will have to make an effort to look for places to smoke instead of simply lighting up anywhere they want. People against the new law are worried that this would encourage more parents lighting up at home but the national government replied that they will be tackling this issue next. It seems like the new law will serve as the platform for more smoke-free legislation.
As a member of the community, you should support the smoking ban that protects people from secondhand smoke and also the environment from the bad effects of cigarette smoke. If you are an employer, you should strictly enforce the guidelines that will transform the place of your business into a smoke-free compliant area.
Aside from the policies and guideline released by the national government in support of the new legislation, you could also come up with guidelines after consulting with your employees. The active participation of your staff will help you implement changes better. Lastly, you should be able to discuss with your employees the importance of this new law as well as the penalties that could be imposed on them for non-compliance.
