“Experience is that marvelous thing that enables you to recognize a mistake when you make it again.” - Franklin P. Jones
Becoming an entrepreneur is about taking an idea and making a successful business from the sale of the idea. If the idea is a product, the sale of the product will require more than simple creativity and innovation.
An expert is a person who has made all the mistakes that can be made in a very narrow field. Niels Bohr
In the 1980s a father in Wyoming created a product for his daughter to play with. The invention consisted of a wheel that was roughly the size of a toy wagon wheel. A separate pole with a stabilizing device attached was used to keep the wheel upright and balanced. This invention provided hours of amusement for his daughter, but when he tried to develop a business selling the product he discovered there was absolutely no market for it. This same gentleman also attempted to prove the viability of the manufacture of cement brickettes as a cost effective substitute for lava rocks in gas grills. He rejected the idea when after a few grillings the cement literally exploded causing the destruction of his grill as well as a steak dinner.
The above is an example of a couple of failures in entrepreneurialism. Consider the above glimpse as an argument for marketing research and testing.
Strong people make as many mistakes as weak people. Difference is that strong people admit their mistakes, laugh at them, learn from them. That is how they become strong. Richard Needham
The perfect entrepreneurial scenario would be to provide a solution to an underserved market where demand exceeds existing supply or to be the first to meet an emerging demand. In either case there needs to be a significant amount of market research to determine the longevity of anticipated demand along with the reliability of the solution you are offering.
Imagine if the cement brickettes were marketed and sold only to have the flaw discovered when someone was injured from cement shrapnel.
So much goes into the development of a business idea and you have to have a solid business plan in mind in order to get funding. It only makes sense to be sure you have completed all the needed research to assure both your banker as well as yourself that the product or service you are offering will provide benefits that will meet demands and provide success for all involved.

You have a great month and make more than you thought possible, but the next month your sales are much lower and by the third month they are almost non existent. What happened and how on earth do you survive this situation?
First of all congratulations on your big sales figures. Do you know why this happened? Did you have a good marketing campaign going on at the time or maybe a lot of referrals. If you dont know make sure you put a tracking system in place so that you do know why in the future?
* Were the sales for the item?
* Did you make a lot of back end sales?
* Where did you advertise?
* Which was your best advert?
So how come your sales then dipped? Did you stop doing what you were originally doing because you were so busy fulfilling the big orders? Best to get your processes sorted out so that does not happen in the future even if it means getting in more short term staff.
The key to keeping up a good sales record is to:
* Find out why it happened.
* Review what the results of your marketing or advertising campaigns are.
* Update these campaigns.
* Make sure that you can manage this success.
* Do it all again.
If the sales were for items that are frequently purchased such as printer ink, donuts, office supplies etc then set up procedures to contact your buyers again at the appropriate time. You dont want to lose those hard won customers!
If you have genuinely been caught out by this sales surge and dont have enough items to immediately fulfill these orders, then be honest with your customers. Drop them an email or postcard and tell them why, let them know when they can have their purchase and offer a discount on their next purchase. Keep these promises!
Remember that as an entrepreneur that your income will not be regular or guaranteed. Work out what funds you need to run your business and your life. If you receive profits above this amount then put that money away until you have a good cushion for the bad times. Aim for 12 months cushion if you can, but at least 3 months. If you have one good week it does not mean that you automatically are going to get another one next month! When you have your large comfortable cushion, you can invest more in your business! Good luck.

Home based businesses are becoming increasingly popular as so many people all over the country are being retrenched for various reasons. This type of business is popular because there are no overheads to be paid as in a conventional business. You do not need premises and lot of staff.
The main thing when planning such a business is to know what you want to do. It is better to first do market research so that you can see where there is a gap in the market for anything that might interest you. Plan how you will operate your business step by step so that you will be leaving nothing to chance.
It will be hard work in the beginning to get started but nothing worthwhile comes without an effort.
If you intend selling products which you make or someone elses you will have to make sure that there is a market to sell them. If you want to render a service make sure that you will have sufficient clients in your area to service.
You might have thought of starting an online business. There are many people making a lot of money doing business online. It is different to the conventional type of selling but can be very lucrative. Check online and see how these businesses are operated and find one that you will be able to operate. Do not buy a business from someone unless they are prepared to give you advice on how to run it or supply you with software so that you can teach yourself.

It’s spring time, the time to rethink some of the things so essential to running a business or planning to start one. Here are a few thoughts that can make you and your business more successful.
1. Business is the process of taking raw materials, goods or services from a beginning point and adding value along the way to the final user. You must understand how your company adds value and how you differentiate yourself, because that is how and why you earn profits.
2. Plan,it is how you add value. Just like building a house, your floor plans are the basic outline and the cash flow statement adds dimensions to your plan. You cant build a house without a plan, and you cannot build a business without a plan.
3. When you re out of cash, you re out of business. It is the lifeblood of your business. Establish budgets, constantly watch and monitor your cash. No asset is more important to your success or survival.
4. Know your inventory. Slow moving or old inventory is like cash sitting on the shelf but you cant spend it. Convert that inventory into cash where it can once again become of value to your company.
5. The customer is not always right, but always has choices. Understand there is competition out there and the cost of gaining a new customer are far more expensive than keeping an old one. Customers buy on value, not cost alone and it is the value you must sell.
6. Understand your market and your target audience. Differentiate yourself. Find a niche in order to dominate your market. Remember much of your revenue comes from a small segment of your total customers.
7. Sell always. Identify your target audience. Know who your buyer is and develop your sales message, selling the benefits and then the features. And always ask for the sale, knowing when you do, so youve earned it.
8. Your employees are a valuable asset. Treat them fairly, keep them employed. Let them know they represent you and get rid of those who dont measure up.
9. Maintain good records. It is the record of your past, the basis for your tax and performance data and the premises for your future. Without good records there is much about your company that you do not know.
10. You don’t know what you don’t know. Continually research your market, your business, your competitors. The market is constantly changing. Not knowing can be costly because you are expected to know.
11. Don’t fall in love with your ideas. You need the best ideassometimes they’re yours and sometimes they’re not. Be open to all good and constructive advice and do not block ideas because you didnt think of them.
12. Advertise your business. Create the desire to buynow. Describe your message, simple and repetitive. Select your media carefully. Utilize a web-site. Focus on your target audience; insist on your agency or media representative showing you how the advertising benefits your company.
13. Use technology. Utilize computer systems to track inventory, customers, and cash flow. Use it to manage your bookkeeping, accounting and to help in maintaining good records. Used correctly technology is a great time saver.
14. Recognize the value of your vendors and suppliers. They are a helpful asset, a source of market research and competitive information. They can provide some short term financing. And always look for new suppliers to replace those who no longer serve you well.
15. Finally, time is a disposable commodity. Once spent it is lost forever. Use technology and planning to optimize your time because it is limited and can never be recovered. Your business is totally consuming, dont let anyone waste your time.
Think about these ideas. Simple as they sound, all too often we sometimes forget. Are you comfortable that you are doing all you should? Identify those areas that need attention and then move forward in 2002.

Without question, launching an online auction business through EBay can be one of the most successful business ventures you can ever make. Every 365, millions of people buy and sell items through this popular online auction place, buying everything from Moroccan rugs to pheromones. Statistics for EBay selling has shown that $14 out of every $100 spent online happens through EBay. Its popular setup and navigational style has let many people starting their own online auction businesses, with many considering it a full-time job. Its premise is easy: EBay selling means offering an item, receiving bids for it, and selling the item to the highest bidder.
The first step to take in starting an EBay business is finding out what you want to sell. Do you want to sell wholesale products like Polo t-shirts and Coach bags you can get at 40% off the retail price? What about an old baseball card collection with cards worth $30 a piece? Products to sell on EBay may also include consignments like used clothes and furniture. EBay itself profits tremendously off each auction with a fraction of the total selling price going to it.
Wholesaling continues to be one of the best forms of EBay selling. Buying items at wholesale prices and reselling them for higher auction prices can earn auctioneers a steady paycheck every month. Wholesalers can also start an EBay business by selling to people who want to resell the same product on the site. Regardless of whether youre a Powerseller or a rookie, establishing a customer service base is crucial when it comes to profit making. A saleable product may fly off the shelves, but your EBay username is defined by the amount of positive buyer feedback you receive. The higher your feedback, the more products youll sell period. Timeliness, accurate product descriptions, and prompt replies to emails will net you the best EBay business reviews.
Reaching the pinnacle of EBay entrepreneurship should award you Powerseller status. To become a Powerseller, you have to earn a feedback rating of at least 98% positive along with $1000 worth of sales every month for three consecutive months. Rather than figuring out the best item to sell for profit on EBay, Powersellers go with their strengths of solid customer service and non defective items. You would figure that a wedding dress auctioneer would have a hard time selling consistently week after week. Not so with EBay! All in all, EBay requires hard work but pays enormous dividends.

“Flaming enthusiasm, backed up by horse sense and persistence, is the quality that most frequently makes for success.” Dale Carnegie
Dale Carnegie should know - he was born a poor farmer’s son and went on to achieve phenomenal success in his own business ventures, and taught others how to do the same. In fact, fifty years after his death, Dale Carnegie courses are still being taught around the globe. The list of big name clients read like a “Who’s Who” of international commerce.
And it was all built using the “magic” combination of enthusiasm, common sense, and persistence.
Maintaining your enthusiasm while struggling to build an online business may be the most difficult of tasks. You will have to face failure, and overcome the feelings of despair that it brings. It may help to know that every successful business has its share of failures. The difference between total failure and overwhelming success lies in applying the other two “magic” ingredients.
You have to apply some common sense to know when the things you are doing are not going to yield results. This may be a little tricky, as quite often known successful methods for building your business are slow and painful. Learn from others that have gone before you, and be careful not to succumb to the abundant “get-rich-quick” hype.
Even when you’re certain that you’re doing all the right things, and you’re still not getting resultspersist. Eventually, you will start to see results. They will trickle in at first, and then build to a steady stream, and before you know it, you’ll be in the middle of a frightening torrent of clients clamoring for your attention.
Be prepared for success! When you start to see that first trickle coming in, imagine what it will be like when the results are ten, twenty, or a hundred times what they are now. Make sure your business is set up to handle the traffic.
The formula for success in business hasn’t changed. We are still using the same basic principles that have always applied, since the dawn of time. Keep them in mind at all times, and put them to good use - they will serve you well!
Tried Network Marketing before and failed? It’s not your
fault. Let this rookie “unknown” marketer show you how he
embarrassed the “gurus” by placing over 4,120 people in his

million dollars. Now he has honed his SYSTEM into an idiot-

Why be a Hot dog man (or woman)? If you’re reading this, maybe you’re looking for the answer. As someone once said: “Just when you think you have the answers, I change the questions!”
For me, I wanted a low key business that involved lots of interaction with people. I like most people and enjoy chatting about the news of the day, the Red Sox, football, the weather, kids, wives, families etc. I was a commissioned salesperson for 20 years before I started this venture, so I know about people. I just wanted to deal with people straight up, without an angle. I have something they want and I give it to them-SIMPLE. I wanted no more of the stress and high pressure of commissioned sales.
I also wanted to be involved with hot dogs because I like hot dogs and I feel the way I cook and serve my hot dogs is the best way; I have never found a hot dog anywhere that tastes quite like mine. The secret is in the way I cook them (not telling…yet) and serving them on freshly butter grilled buns (Its all about the buns, baby). I figured if I could serve up a consistently good hot dog, I’d do OK.
Which leads me to the final reason I got into the business- MONEY! Cash is KING and you can make a very nice income selling hot dogs. I know I’ll never be a Rockefeller from this venture, but I can earn enough and be relaxed and happy and have plenty of time left over for my family, my little league team, my master’s degree and now Helium.
The work itself is very uncomplicated. Serve good food and treat people nice. If you do that, the customers keep coming back.
One of the pitfalls of this business is crappy weather (I write this on a night in February and its about 5 degrees outside-it was a cold and lonely day at the hot dog truck). In the winter you’ll be cold-like ice fishing without the fish or beer; in the summer you’ll be hot-picture a 95 degree day and you’re standing next to a grill all day. Every once in a while I also feel that the work is too repetitive-that feeling usually goes away once I get the first customer of the day. Overall, for me, the advantages and lifestyle this business brings outweigh the bad stuff.
What you need to ask yourself is why do YOU want to be in the hot dog biz? If you decide that you want to give it a go, keep reading about how to get going.
I run my business in the same location, Monday through Friday from 10:30-3PM. Other folks will travel to different locations, operate “after the bars close” in hopping nightlife areas while others work large events (fairs, festivals, parades etc.). I have a customer who sells sausages on Friday and Saturday nights in a downtown Worcester, MA area with lots of bars and he also works Downtown Worcester on the 4th of July-he sold 1200 pounds of sausages on 7/4/2006! For the purposes of this article, I’ll deal with the “same location” model.
The first thing you need to do is find a good spot. Anywhere there are lots of people is good. If you are in an urban area where parking is limited or you can locate in a park, you may want to consider a hot dog cart. If you’re in a suburban setting, look for areas where there is a lot of vehicle traffic and a ready supply of regular hungry customers. Good parking is a must for this type of setup. If you have the space in your spot (and the money) you may want to consider a truck or trailer for your biz. I like having a truck-mine is a “mobile kitchen”-because there is more room, shelter from the elements and a decent amount of food prep and storage space.
If you are going to be on public property, check with the local police department for any restrictions you may face regarding locations or any special site permits you may need. Most municipalities have websites these days and oftentimes that type of information is available there, if not the cops are a good place to start (cops like hot dogs-I have many as regulars).
Locating on private property eliminates the need for site permits, but you’ll have to pay rent. This is the arrangement I have. The advantages of my location are plenty of parking, good visibility on a well travelled route, proximity to a large industrial/office park and lots of construction in the area (construction workers like hot dogs too). I also know my location will be plowed on snowy mornings and, since I am in the parking lot of an office building and gas station(with a car wash going in next spring) I know there will always be steady traffic in and out. One other plus is that there are few eating places nearby that don’t involve going into a congested secondary highway-folks pop out of the back entrance of the office park to get to my spot. The rent is worth it. If you can find a site with these characteristics-you’d be well advised to snag the location. This will involve some networking and sleuthing on your part.
If you get into this business, you will need to get a permit from your local Board of Health.
Many local Boards require Servesafe certification before they will issue a permit. If they do, you’ll need to take the Servesafe exam.
Dealing with the Board of Health really means dealing with the local Health Inspector-he or she is the person who you will deal with. Just like any other occupation, some are nice and some are jerks-I am lucky that my local Health Inspector is a fair and nice man-it doesn’t hurt that he likes hot dogs too. Whether the person is nice or not, they are a resource. You can find the local Health Inspector’s contact info on any municipalities’ website. The best thing to do is call them up and politely engage them in a conversation. Tell them you want to open a hot dog stand, where you were thinking of locating (again if its on public land make sure you’ve checked out local restrictions and permits, if you’re on private property let the inspector know where), let them know you’ll be getting your Servesafe and ask them what you need to do. Most inspectors will be straightforward and let you know exactly what you need to do and what type of equipment will meet with local health codes..
Once you’ve figured out what the Health inspector requires, you can move on to acquiring a hot dog cart, truck or trailer. There are many varieties and manufacturers and prices range from a couple of thousand dollars to over $200,000 for a totally decked out mobile kitchen. You’ll need to decide what will suit your site, your tolerance for the elements and your budget. If you’re buying new, try to deal with a company geographically nearby-it makes no sense to order a hot dog cart or truck from a company in Sacremento if you live in Philadelphia! There are always good values to be found in used equipment too, try to find someone selling hot dog equipment used and you’ll get more bang for your buck.
I’ll be adding to this article- check my blog http://thehotdogtruck.blogspot.com/ for updates and insight into the hot dog business.

Are you the type to sing in your car? Play air guitar or air drums? I am, mostly to lost classic hair bands on my satellite radio. Having fun in what you do is critically important to the overall success of your business. If you are not having fun doing what you are currently doing, why are you doing it?
You need to question why are you doing something if you are not enjoying it or having fun doing it. The fun factor is a critical component to retaining passion in your business and also a major step in just wanting to get out of bed in the morning. I remember when I was fourteen years old, I worked at a local pub as a dishwasher. I really enjoyed the first few months working there, I had a great boss and an excellent team. Management changes occurred and it stopped being fun. Now, remember that I was fourteen and fourteen year olds love to have fun. I did not enjoy heading to the pub for my shift. At that time I didnt drive so I rode my bicycle to and from work. I remember trying to ride as slow as I could so it would take longer to get there. No fire in the belly, no passion to even step foot in the place. What happened was that in my brain, I was getting there faster. I eventually left that pub. Reflecting back it was a great lesson on having fun in what you do.
Business owners need to keep this in mind when running their businesses. It needs to be a place that your team enjoys coming to work in. If you are not creating this environment, you will have employees riding their bikes really slowly. Now, since we are not teenagers anymore, what happens to the average employee?
Check out Employees check out, they may be sitting there physically but they are not in tune with what is happening around them. They do not return phone calls or emails. They show up right on time and leave when the whistle blows at the end of the day.
Poison Factor Employees that are not having fun in the office look for other things to replace the fun that is lacking in the work experience. This may be the enjoyment of spreading rumours or other gossip around the office. They also try hard to bring others down to their level of discontent.
They leave when the workplace stops being fun, employees simply leave the organization. What are you doing as the business owner to create a fun environment that allows your team to flourish?
Business owners today need to look in the mirror. They are the ones that create or allow the culture of fun in the workplace to develop. I have seen many business owners create a strict, no fun workplace and their business suffers. When employees are permitted to let their hair down creativity goes up, performance goes up, appreciation goes up, longevity goes up, sales numbers go up, profits go up enough said.
Creating a fun environment needs to have its guidelines. Do not let it get to the extreme where fun wins over actual work. Business owners need to keep a fine balance in place. Allow the fun things to occur, like stories around the water cooler, employee lunches, team building events and other fun types of things and stuff to occur however closely monitor output as well. Ensure that all business measurement is going in the right direction. Some people can abuse the fun factor and may need to be reminded from time-to-time that work actually has to happen as well. When the culture is right, employees will self-manage each other and this may never be a concern.

If you have a Request for Proposal that has been issued from a potential or current client company or a government agency, then, first, you have a bid/no bid decision to make.
To make this decision you should carefully read the RFP in its entirety. If any information is unclear, usually, the RFP will give information on how to and with whom to communicate with. Guidelines are usually in place concerning people who can be contacted, and the methods of communications, frequently these days it is by email only and the questions and answers are sent to everyone who received the RFP.
After reading the RFP, put the information into four categories: 1.) Administrative/logistical/ contact information, 2.) Legal clauses and specifications that will govern the contract, 3.) Requirements for solution development, scope of work, technical expertise, etc., and 4.) Format guidelines.
Now, make a list of all the contradictions, missing elements, inexplicable jargon, and unclear statements that you need to raise questions about at a bidders conference or email to the contact person.
Once you have a thorough understanding of the RFP, you can determine the answers to the following questions:
- What is the real purpose of the RFP?
- What is the scope and magnitude of the requirements?
- What confidence do you have that you or your organization can fulfill all the requirements?
Determining the purpose of the buyer (such as, Are they just trying to get information?) and the strength of your competition might indicate that winning the contract would not be possible or not be in the best interest of your business. You want to focus any efforts as time consuming as writing a proposal only on the RFPs which present opportunities for quality contracts.
Outside the government, there is no standard for RFPs. They may be clearly understandable documents or poorly written and difficult to understand in terms of the actual requirements and scope.
For example, an RFP might go out for a one-hour training video. What are the real requirements you are being asked to fulfill? Do they want you to just film an existing training session as it is being presented, so all you are doing is shooting the film and doing a little editing? Do they want you to work on the development of the training, the scripting, filming high-quality with full crew, edit, add animations or interactive exercises, and do they want it connected to a Learning Management System?
You must make sure that you understand the true scope of the requirements before you make your decision to put in the effort of writing a proposal.
Start work on a requirements checklist at this time, and continue updating through the communications and bidders meeting. For now, this checklist will give you the scope and magnitude of the project. When your proposal is complete, the checklist can be used to verify that you have covered all the requirements and did not miss anything in calculating your costs.
Once you understand the scope and magnitude of the requirements, you may find that winning the contract might not be cost productive. Do you have the capabilities (staff, resources, and finances) to fulfill the requirements, or would you need to take into account sub-contractors, new equipment, additional inventory, or even a loan for upfront expenses? Would you need to form an alliance with a competitor or complimentary company to fulfill all the requirements.
If two or more companies or sub-contractors are involved, then the process of preparing the proposal becomes more complex; exactly what items of fulfillment each of the companies or sub-contractors will be responsible for must be addressed.
Making a chart of your analysis can help you make your bid/no bid decision. Look at the chart below: A yes should be checked in a large percentage of the boxes.
At this point, you will have determined whether or not the purpose of the RFP is valid, know the scope and magnitude of what you would be bidding on, and have determined whether you could fulfill the requirements. Now you only have to answer one question: Is this job worth the time and effort required to write and excellent proposal?

At some time in every persons life they have probably imagined themselves starting their own business and becoming wildly successful. For the majority of them it was just a dream and they took no action to pursue it. A likely reason is the realization that starting such a venture takes a large amount of time and risk, not to mention money and sacrifice. For the intrepid few that took the chance of starting a business only a small percentage managed to achieve any measure of success.
The question is whether it is smart to start a business in todays economic environment. The good news is that there will always be a place in virtually any economy for a well-run business that focuses on providing meaningful and necessary products or services at competitive prices.
Your business, existing either now or simply sitting as an idea, could be among this elite few that make it. You have to learn to play the game smart. You must be ready to deal with both the good times and the bad. You will have to make tough, yet logical decisions concerning strategy, finances, employees and anything else related to running a company.
Remember earlier I mentioned just about everyone has had an idea for a business startup? If you are reading this and have such an idea then consider the following principle to get started. Find a need and fill it. All around us there countless products and services which themselves are supported by satellite support businesses started by people who saw a need and filled it.
Take the time to really think about the industry you wish to be in and starting jotting down whatever ideas come to mind. Dont disregard anything at first however far-fetched it may appear. Anyone remember the Chia Pet? Here is a classic example of an idea that most sane people would have laughed off as frivolous and doomed for failure, yet you can visit almost any retail outlet in this country today and see not only has this idea thrived but it has grown to include a wide variety of earthen figures that grow grass out of their heads.
It has been said that the best ideas have yet to be realized. The next million dollar idea could be sitting right between your ears. Its up to you to pursue it. Take action today.
